Tivo - Oztivo software setup - New Zealand

NOTE: This document is for the older OzTivo Image 1.3. If you are starting with a blank hard drive, and want to use the latest, easier install, see ImageWithScreenShots1.4 (it also has helpful screenshots). This document is similar to Imaging, which does not have screenshots.

This page is intended for newbies to share my learning's about installing the software on the Tivo, and show what some of the screens look like (what to expect). I'm no expert, but I hope this helps.
Thanks to all of those who helped me get up and running - your help has been very much appreciated.

I can only advise on what I know. My Tivo is a US Philips from [Eksys] (thanks George, great service!) with a 160GB hard drive, and Cachecard with 512MB Ram. The following is how I set it up. I assume certain things - like you have abilities to connect hard drives to PC's, take suitable precautions (such as anti-static strips etc) and have a generally good knowledge of the PC world (though as I found out, a knowledge of Linux would have served me better).

Sites I Recommend
[Oztivo Forums]

[LJ's Tivoweb Page] for TivoWeb modules
[OzTivo Guided Setup Page] on the OzTivo site and <p> [here] is the NZ forum Emulator message

Before You Start <p> You will need several items:<p> The disk image from OzTivo - (70 meg download from [OzTivo Website] - currently named hdr112.30.oztivo_emulator.release1.3. Write the .iso file to a CD to create a boot disk.

(To write .iso files use 'Nero'- download and install demo version (package 1) from [here]. Beware of expiry date, but this can be overcome by temporarily changing your computer's date. Run programs>nero>nero 6 demo>nero burning ROM. Cancel the New Compilation window; under Recorder menu choose "Burn image...", then select your .iso file, click 'open', then 'burn'.)
<p> Also download the nic install CD ISO from [Silicon Dust] (37 meg) and write to a CD (also bootable) as above. This includes the Turbonet/Cachecard/Airnet drivers.

Torx screwdrivers - size 10 & 15 (for opening the case and installing HDD)

Also it has been suggested that you replace the power cable that came with the Tivo with one better suited to NZ's 250V power supply - better safe than sorry...<p> A Lan connection<p> A valid video source into the Tivo (Like me you probably don't have the last two in the same place - so maybe a 5 or 10 metre network cable too)<p>

<p>
Note - Hard drive can be used straight from the dealer - does not need to be

formatted etc.

Connect the drive to your PC. I set this up with the hard drive as master on the secondary chain with the CD drive as master on the primary.

Boot from the OzTivo Boot disk - Hit ENTER at the Boot: prompt, and again when instructed. After loading drivers etc you will be presented with a screen similar to this:

Image:DSC02386_(Medium).JPG

Type the following:
restore -s127 -r4 -xzpi  /cdrom/hdr112.30.oztivo_emulator.release1.3 /dev/hdc

(Note: after typing /hdr you can press the Tab key to auto complete the file name)
where hdc represents the master disk on the secondary IDE (replace to suit your configuration) and -s127 creates a swap file.
Note: Any other swap file setting is likely to fail and result in NO swap file at all. See [http://minnie.tuhs.org/twiki/bin/view/Howto/FixSwapIssues]
This comes up with:</p> <p>
Image:DSC02387_(Medium).JPG

Then shows:
Restore done! Adding pair /dev/hdc12-dev/hdc13
New estimated standalone size: 174 hours (173 more)
/#

Note - mine seemed to sit for some time at 185 megabytes, but then carried on - nothing to worry about.

After this is done (wait for the /# prompt), reboot with CTRL-ALT-DEL and before it restarts (after it has shut down), power off.
</p> <p>At this point it has been suggested that you connect the drive into your Tivo and boot up to the guided setup, then power off and replace the drive back into the PC. Not doing this may cause some further issues. I personally would recommend doing this.</p> <p>
Install Turbonet/Cachecard/Airnet Drivers
</p> <p><p>
Instructions from Silicondust:

1) Insert the nic_install CD and reboot - make sure the PC boots off the CD. This is to ensure the boot order is correct. If you boot into Windows with a TiVo hard drive attached, Windows writes a signature to the first sector which prevents the TiVo from booting.

2) Install the TiVo A drive into the PC as the Secondary-Master. It will also work as the Primary-Slave or Secondary-Slave but you will have to change the jumpers on the TiVo harddrive. It will not work as Primary-Master. If you have two drives, only install the TiVo A drive.

3) Boot off the CD again, press <enter> for the default boot option and <enter> and the login screen.

4) Run nic_install by specifing the appropiate driver to install (one of):
/nic_install/nic_install turbonet
/nic_install/nic_install airnet
/nic_install/nic_install cachecard

5) If it askes for permission to disable initrd then say yes. If you have a DTivo and you have not run tivoflash before then you need to run tivoflash after running nic_install.

6) Configure network settings: - If you want to be able to find your tivo easilly on the network then set the IP address to a static address appropiate for your network.

7) '0' to save and exit. Answer yes to clear the log file (kepts is short if you need to dump the log later).

8) If you have a DTivo AND it asked to disable initrd when you ran nic_install, AND you have not run tivoflash before, then you need to run tivoflash:

/tivoflash/install

Do NOT run tivoflash on a SA!

9) Reboot PC (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and then turn off before it restarts to remove harddrive. If you changed the jumpers on the harddrive then don't forget to change them back.

10) Install harddrive, turbonet/airnet/cachecard, and network cable (turbonet/cachecard) into tivo.

11) Power up and test. For a cachecard watch for the red light on the cachecard - it indicates that the memory is being accessed.

12) Proceed to Guided Setup below

Previous cachecard instructions

For some reason, the drive must be jumpered as a Slave at this point. If you do not do this, you will get an error message saying "No TiVo Drive Detected".<p> Restart with the nic install boot disk in the CD drive, and place the Cachecard driver disk in your floppy drive. Reboot from the CD. You should see a screen like this:</p> <p> Image:DSC02388_(Medium).JPG

Hit Enter when it shows Boot, and it will begin loading:</p> <p> Image:DSC02389_(Medium).JPG
At the TBD Login: </p> <p> </p> <p> Image:DSC02392_(Medium).JPG
type "root" and enter</p> <p>
A message comes up with "mount: block device /dev/hda is write protected, mounting image as read-only" - (hda may differ depending on your config). This refers to the CDRom and should not concern you.</p> <p>Make sure the floppy with the Cachecard driver is loaded into the floppy drive.

At the # prompt, type the following (pressing ENTER after each line):

mkdir /mnt/fd0

mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 mnt/fd0

cd /mnt/fd0

chmod +x nic_install

./nic_install cachecard
 </p> <p> Image:DSC02400_(Medium).JPG </p> <p>
Should read from the floppy and the give a screen full.
Image:DSC02402_(Medium).JPG </p> <p>etc etc - then this....</p> <p> Image:DSC02403_(Medium).JPG </p> <p>At this point you may like to set the Tivo's IP address (make it easier to find on the network, it isn't absolutely necessary to do this however, so you only need to do this if you want to specify the local network address. Otherwise it will by default use DHCP).Press 2 and enter the IP address, subnet mask and IP Gateway you want.</p> eg If your network is 192.168.1.xxx you may set your IP as 192.168.1.10 and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (this indicates that only the last digits in your IP address range will vary).<p> Enter your IP gateways address (hope you know this... mine is 192.168.1.0 - your's may well be xxx.xxx.xxx.0 (where the x's match the rest of your network addressing) too as this seems quite standard).<p> <p>Check and make sure 'daily call = network' the press 0 (Apply and exit).</p> <p> Image:DSC02413_(Medium).JPG </p> <p>Hit Y to clear the log file.</p> <p>
If during this (at the ./nic_install cachecard line) you get a segmentation fault, or Input/Output error, it's probably a bad floppy disk (could be other issues but...) - create another (or a few) and try again.
</p> <p> Image:DSC02393_(Medium).JPG <p> Image:DSC02412_(Medium).JPG
Equally, if you get an error  - unable to mount partition "/dev/hdc9" (22) , press Ctrl-Alt-Del and after it has restarted, power off the PC, load the hard disk into the Tivo and boot to the Guided Setup screen, then power off and try again in the PC as above (to be safe, try another floppy at this time too).
</p> <p> Image:DSC02410_(Medium).JPG </p> <p> </p> <p>If all goes well, Ctrl-Alt-Del and turn off the PC. Don't forget to change the jumper back to 'Master' before continuing.
<p>

Running Guided Setup<p>

Place the Hard Drive in the Tivo unit, install the cachecard with ram, (see the following [PDF File] if applicable (pay attention to the bit about removing the rubber foot - it makes it a whole lot easier) and power on unit . You should see an OzTivo logo come up, replaced quickly (ish) with a Silicon Dust screen (for Cachecard users) similar to:</p> <p> Image:cachcardscreen.JPG </p> <p>Note, this Writes, Verifies, and Caches the program data - takes quite some time (assuming you have the 512 meg ram loaded on the Cachevard).</p> <p>You will eventually get to the Guided Setup... BUT STOP THERE.</p> <p>If you carry on without the next step, expect a screen similar to this:</p> <p> Image:zipissue.jpg </p> <p> </p> <p>At this point you need to telnet into the Tivo and make a change. I use Hyperterminal for this...</p> <p>Start - All Programs - Accessories - Communications - Hyperterminal</p> <p>Create a new connection to the Tivo's IP address and connect to it.</p> Image:tivo.h1.jpg </p>

You will need to make the file system writeable. At the prompt type:<p>RW</p> <p>And press ENTER. <p>At the prompt, type <p> joe /etc/tclient.conf and press ENTER. <p> Note: This is NOT Notepad - You must use specific commands for navigating and editing this file. Press Cntr K H for help. <p> If you absolutely stuff this up, press Cntr C to cancel without saving and start over. <p> You will see the following:</p> <p> </p> <p> Image:tivo.h2.jpg </p> <p>Pressing Cntr K H for help brings up a help command list as below. Note - the ^ indicates use of the Cntr key.</p> <p> Image:tivo.h3.jpg </p> </p> <p>Using the Cntr B, Cntr F,Cntr P, & Cntr N, to move around, scroll down and find the line <p># This is for the server emulator on minnie.

and edit the line immediately after to match the following:</p>

127::210.48.107.133:80:::
<p> (remove any leading #) or if using the development emulator:</p> 127::210.48.107.133:8000::: <p> NOTE: The minnie emulator is the one used in Australia. We are replacing it with the NZ emulator, so if you wish you can replace "server emulator on minnie" with "NZ emulator."
NOTE: These addresses are correct (as at Feb 2006) - but may be prone to change from time to time (rarely we hope).
NOTE: The above assumes you are using a LAN card - If you are using a dialup modem, you should look at using a Modem in New Zealand.
<p> You will need to ensure that the lines following "Dennis' Emulator" and "emuProxy2" have a # inserted before the address (this prevents these from working). <p>

Image:Tivo.h4a.JPG </p>

Save the file (Cntr KX) and then type<p> RO </p> <p>(and Enter) to return the file system to Read Only. Now type</p> <p>Reboot <p>and ENTER to restart the Tivo unit.</p>

<p> Guided Setup<p> <p>Back to the TV now, and after rebooting you should be at the Guided Setup screen, and you'll see "TiVo Service Terms"

Press 'select' to go to next screen

"Program Source" Select Cable and press "Select"

"Zip Code" Enter 02113 for Sky Digital or 02115 for Saturn Cable

"Time Zone" Doesn't matter.. just select the first one (Eastern) and press 'Select'

"Daylight Savings" select "no" and press "select" button

"Area Code" Enter 002 and press 'Select'

"Phone Dialing Options" select 'no : continue' and press 'select'

"Setup Call" Press select to go past this screen
<p> Image:DSC02417_(Medium).JPG

It will take a while to connect and do it's thing. It will fail at this point if you did not correctly modify the tclient.conf file.

Let it do its thing  - it takes some time.

When finished press 'select'

"Dial In Numbers" choose 'none of the above' and press 'select'

"No local Numbers" choose 'sales and marketing program' and press 'Select'

"Cable box" select yes and press 'select'

"Cable Providers" choose 'Sky Digital Auckland' or the Saturn option if that is what you have and press 'select'

On the screen where it asks about how the box is connected, set to appropriate choice for your environment (either composite a/v in or s-video).</p> <p> Image:gset.jpg </p> <p>Now select the cable box brand for your system (my Sky box is a Pace unit - I selected that then played around with the IR options).</p> <p>Then let it do it's thing to download and organise the program data. This will take 4 - 8 hours (actually, probably less) - in the mean time you can watch TV, pause rewind etc -  just not setup any programs to record. Note that while this is going on it will still be in Maintenance Mode and the video will appear jerky.</p> <p>When all is complete, you must reboot, possibly several times until you no longer get the Maintenance Mode Screen.</p> <p>At this point all should be OK, however, if your time is out of whack with what it should be and the guide data you may have to telnet into the Tivo and at the bash prompt do

settime YYYYMMDDhhmmss
settime -rtc

then reboot</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>That's it. As said, I'm no expert, so questions should not be directed at me (not yet anyway) but there are excellent forums to be found at [OzTivo] and a bunch of people I am also learning from. </p>

<p> Thanks, <p> Neil
